Dogwood & Hastings is debuting in September, 2014 on Kickstarter, with a collection of housewares, including tablecloths, napkins, and accompanying “table jewelry” (napkin rings, candleholders and tablecloth weights).
Coming in the Spring of 2015, pillows, curtains and additional styles of tablecloths and napkins will be brought to our fans. Hopefully totebags too, as I have just sourced some high-quality organic cotton/recycled poly canvas.
Pillows are made with a supersoft organic cotton knit fabric, and pillow inserts are stuffed with downy (and vegan) kapok tree fiber; all designs will continue to be based on original photographs by Starre Vartan.

I worked with talented jewelry designer Natalie Frigo on a set of companion pieces to the Dogwood & Hastings line: She uses only recycled metals and made-in-NYC production for the Fortress collection of table jewelry, which includes napkin rings, candleholders and tablecloth weights.
Fortress Tablecloth Weights: Traditionally, tablecloth weights are used to keep tablecloths from being blown by the wind when dining al fresco, but I think they look lovely indoors too, dangling from tablecloth corners.
Fortress Napkin Rings: Napkin rings make a table feel set, polished and complete. They also keep napkins tidy!
Fortress Candlestick Holders: Small in stature, big on impact, these recycled brass beauties look lovely on their own or with the rest of Fortress.

Manhattan Bedrock Print: This is the foundational print for Dogwood & Hastings. It’s a closeup of the Hartland Formation, which is the extremely tough bedrock that underlies much of the island of Manhattan, where my family lived for almost 100 years. Without this incredibly hard, strong rock underlying them, the skyscrapers of NYC would not have been able to be built as tall as they were. This image is taken from one of the Central Park outcroppings, near the Pond at the 59th St. and 5th Ave entrance. The small brown bits are curled up, fallen leaves. This print is more subtle in color, but is ALL about the texture of the rock.
Sherbet Sky Print: Riviera Nayarit is a quiet region on Mexico’s West Coast, and when I recently spent a month in Mexico, I had to check out the famous surf break, El Anclote, in Punta de Mita, a small town in the area. This shot of the sky at sunset from the beach facing the break was at first just a study in color; I just couldn’t keep myself from trying to capture the brilliant pastel tones of the sky. I was so wrapped up with obsessing about the color, I didn’t even notice the birds flying high in the sky, crossing the sunset, but you can make them out on the tablecloth (as well as some very distant boats).
November Mushroom Print: Oregon’s rainy season starts in the early autumn, and goes through the winter; this past November produced an bumper crop of fungus the likes of which hasn’t been seen in some time. I crawled around on my hands and knees under some hemlocks for hours, getting covered in mud (while doing my best not to smoosh any ‘shrooms), getting drizzled on, to get this forest-floor level shot of these gorgeous mushrooms. I was drawn to them because of the lovely lilt of their edges, which look like petticoats, but when I looked them up later I found they were likely to be “magic mushrooms” from the Psilocybe cyanescens species. They have a pretty lavender tint and a velvety top and were just one of about 15 types of mushrooms I found in a small area that day.
The Eternal Flight print: This image was taken on the same surf-break beach, El Anclote, as the Sherbet Sky print, the following morning. A single cloud floated over the sea, and when I saw a flock of birds heading towards it, I couldn’t resist capturing them mid-flap.
Yankee Orange print: This one comes from the New England Woods collection, and was taken during autumn in Connecticut, a spectacular time of year in the region and the state. The calm-cool feeling in the air during the autumn, the way the light makes its way between the leaves and how the colors create a beautiful cast on everything is a little bit of natural magic.
Winged Decay Print: It’s an incredible thing that in the natural world, the process of decay is just as beautiful as the processes of growth and fertilization. This bird had been eaten by a predator, its wing left behind as inedible, and it was slowly being recycled on the forest floor. The detail in this print is a complex wonder of the recognizable (acorns, leaves, feathers) and the infinite.
Pink Urchiness print: I shot this glistening pink-purple sea urchin at Yaquina Head on the Oregon coast; it was tucked up against a smooth grey cobblestone, and the juxtaposition of the grey tones of the rock and the urchin’s glistening spikes was absolutely dreamy. I was dashing up and down the stoney beach as the waves came in, not an easy feat since the cobbles were moving beneath me. As the cobbles rolled with the waves, they made the most incredible percussive sound. It was a fun, and totally immersive photography session.
